Leiden is a historic town, famous for its canals, historic alleys and national museums. The historic elements are very vissible, for instance the Roman stronghold, in the middle of the citycentre. Since Leiden primarily is a university town, it's a lovely city to live and also study in. As a reward for the liberation of Leiden from the Spanish tyranny, the city received its own university in 1575.

The University of Leiden is the oldest in The Netherlands. A university that has brought forth great
scholars. Leiden is considered one of the world?s most eminent centres of knowledge and scholarship. In particular,
disciplines like astronomy, medicine and law draw students from all over the world.

Leiden University is related to honored scientists as Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (Nobelprice winner in1913) and Nobel-laureats Hendrik Lorentz, Pieter Zeeman (both Physics) and Willem Einthoven (Physiology/Medicine). Other renowned scientists who have left their tracks are Constantijn Huygens, René Descartes and Albert Einstein. Leiden is also known for its famous painters. Rembrandt, Jan Steen and Piet Mondriaan all sprung from this town.  Leiden has also inspired many writers, such as Jacob van Lennep, Nicolaas Beets (Hildebrand), Jan Wolkers, Maarten 't Hart and Abdelkader Benali.
